We offer MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) plants in the area of aerobic activated sludge treatment. These systems use filler media that support biofilm growth, enhancing the interaction between microorganisms and substrate transport. Moreover, biofilm development adapts to effluent composition, while detachment is controlled by predation, shear forces, abrasion, and spontaneous collapse. By maintaining a higher biomass concentration in the aeration tank, MBBR technology reduces basin size and increases treatment efficiency. Additionally, a TSS separation section with disc filtration can be included if required, ensuring optimized and reliable wastewater treatment.

The existing treatment plant, essentially consisting of biological equalization and oxidation, was adapted with the insertion of the filling bodies by modifying the ventilation system and the management of the discharge. Final filtration was added with discs that receive the flow tangentially on the metal mesh with a light of a few microns, in order to separate the waste biomass from the waste water. The sludge accumulates in the thickener for periodic purging. The water falls back into the sewer passing through a flow meter.

Removal of high concentrations of COD and Suspended Solids, thanks to the installation of a flotator downstream of the MBBR plant, which guarantees the elimination of problems related to the presence of light substances and the high load of organic matter typical of static settlers . The peculiarity of this new application was the resolution of one of the main problems of an MBBR system: the progressive decrease of the purification yield, due to the progressive clogging of the carriers which does not allow the intimate contact between the biofilm and the substances to be degraded as well as the oxygen dissolved in water. This phenomenon causes the progressive worsening of the characteristics of the wastewater at the final discharge. The problem was solved thanks to an innovative automatic and timed cleaning system of the carriers, thus guaranteeing the excellent purification yields of the MBBR system combined with flotation. In this phase there is an increase in the Suspended Solids exiting the oxidation tank, eliminated by the correct sizing of the flotator.

Upgrading of the purifier serving the waste water of a pharmaceutical product synthesis plant (process water, scrubbing towers washing, filter washing, equipment reclamation, supernatants and various purges), with the installation of a biological oxidation system through the ” use of MBBR technology with carriers in the tank and the separation of biological sludge by lamellar decanters, after dosing of polyelectrolyte.
