The membrane ultrafiltration process provides effective filtration, preventing biomass and colloidal particles from entering the effluent, while allowing operation at high sludge concentrations with precise control of sludge age. Unlike traditional systems that rely on sedimentation, membrane separation ensures consistent performance regardless of sludge settling characteristics. Consequently, the membrane bioreactor can maintain sludge concentrations of 8–10 g/L without compromising filtration capacity, enabling more efficient and flexible wastewater treatment.

Reduced sensitivity to changes in the feed: the efficiency of ultrafiltration membranes is not dependent on the settling of the biological flocs; the sludge is retained even if the bioreactor undergoes the entry of a toxic substance or a sudden increase in organic or hydraulic load or even a pH shock.

The intervention involved the construction of an ultrafiltration section, with hollow fiber membranes, for the optimization and implementation of the performance of the existing biological activated sludge purification system, in addition to the replacement of the sedimentation unit of the first biological oxidation stage.
